This week, we urged Floridians to be ready to weather any major storm in recognition of National Preparedness Month. September is also traditionally the most active time of the hurricane season, with the peak day being on September 10.

Disasters can occur without much warning. With Hurricane Francine making landfall in Louisiana this week, Tropical Storm Gordon forming in the Atlantic and other tropical disturbances being tracked, it is crucial for Floridians to be ready. National Preparedness Month is a good time to assess your emergency plans, update disaster kits and remain alert.

Our 2024 Hurricane Preparedness Guide provides plenty of tips on storm preparations and a supply checklist. Some of the tips include:

• Create an Emergency Plan: Develop a family communication plan and decide on a safe meeting place. Ensure everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency;
• Stay Informed: Monitor local news and weather updates. Follow the Florida Division of Emergency Management’s X account @FLSERT for live updates on weather emergencies;
• Prepare Homes and Businesses: Secure outdoor items, review insurance policies and consider the installation of storm shutters or impact-resistant windows; and
• Understand Evacuation Routes: Be familiar with local evacuation routes and shelters, and have local emergency numbers handy.
