MFCU Arrests Crestview Woman for Abuse of Disabled Adult

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Attorney General Ashley Moody today announced the arrest of a Crestview woman for abuse of a disabled woman. Tuesday, the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office arrested Angelia Maddox. The arrest followed an investigation by Attorney General Moody’s MFCU.

Acting on a referral by the Florida Department of Children and Families Adult Protective Services, MFCU investigators discovered that Maddox had verbally and physically abused a disabled adult while working as a caregiver at a day program. According to the investigation, a witness observed Maddox grabbing the disabled adult by the neck and hair and violently shaking the victim. Later, another witness observed Maddox verbally abusing the victim.

Maddox is charged with one count of abuse of disabled adult, a third-degree felony. The Attorney General’s Office, through an agreement with the State Attorney Office in the First Judicial Circuit, will prosecute the case.

The Florida Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit investigates and prosecutes providers that intentionally defraud the state’s Medicaid program through fraudulent billing practices. Medicaid fraud essentially steals from Florida’s taxpayers. Additionally, the MFCU investigates allegations of patient abuse, neglect, and exploitation in facilities receiving payments under the Medicaid program.
